TJ had a great baseball season this past spring. He was involved with four different teams and that kept us busy!!
He started with Cal Ripken League (formerly Little League), the Phillies and his school team the Flames. The Phillies ended up winning half their games. His main position was catcher and sometime he was outfield. His school team lost ALL of their games except one tournament game against their rival, the Warriors. In the last tournament game, they beat against the Warriors and ended up in third place! His main position with that team was catcher, there was no one else that could play. The day of the tournament, they had three games and TJ was catcher for all three! He sure was tired that day.
As soon as school ball ended, he signed up for Babe Ruth, the Dodgers. Now this was an exciting team, after some mediocre wins with the last two teams...this team went undefeated! TJ's main position here was 3rd baseman and back up catcher. The boys were throwing some fast pitches and he was a little fearful of being behind the plate catching those 90+mph pitches!
After Cal Ripken finished, TJ made All Stars! The coaches were really good about TJ playing Babe Ruth and All Stars. There were many times that he had a BR game at 5:30, then at 7:00 he would have his AS game. The nice thing that helped us out, his teamate on BR was also on his AS team. C's dad would take the boys to their second game and I would just come when I was ready!
In AS, TJ once again was the catcher and sometime 3rd baseman. In their last game of the season, his coach found out TJ used to pitch. This whole season TJ caught and threw no pitches! So of course, I was a Nervous Nelly and all these thoughts were coming to my head. He hasn't practiced any of his pitches, how was he going to do? Will he be able to throw strikes, or is he going to walk them? Ugh, the best thing was just to toss those thoughts away and enjoy the game.
So, the first ball is thrown...Yes, a strike! Then another and another! His first inning was awesome, three up and three down. 1, 2, 3 and here I was worried that he was going to struggle. He pitched for five innings and had a good game. They ended up losing and that ended their season.
All in all, TJ had a great five months of baseball and is looking forward to the 2011 season. He won't be on so many teams next time, he's too old for Cal Ripken. So it'll only be school ball and BR. That'll be easier for his G-ma and me, no more driving him all over town to practices and games!
