Mom vs Picky Eater...Round I

TJ is 12 years old and one stubborn eater!!  He does not like vegetables, the only ones I can get him to eat are raw carrots or celery (w/PB).  Fortunately, he likes fruit so that makes mealtimes somewhat easier.  It allows us to have some compromises now and again.
However, the other night was a doozy!  TJ refused to eat dinner, not even TRY the "one helping spoonful" of veggies on his plate!  At my wits end, I told him that he is not to get up from the table until he ate all of his dinner (ugh, I had to resort to forcing my parental leverage on him).  Well, I said it and there was no way I was going to back down (my ego was definitely doing the talking)!  Since he was just sitting at the table doing nothing, I figured I could at least make use of his time by educating him...so I popped in the movie "Food, Inc".  He refused to watch it w/VM and I when we first got it and had NO interest.  But since he had nowhere to go, I figured he'd at least hear some bits and pieces of it.  So, off I went to my bedroom to fold laundry.
Fifteen minutes go by and I go to the kitchen to get some water.  Before I left, TJ was sitting at the table and his back was to the TV.  Now, his body was turned slightly and I could tell he was listening to the movie but not quite watching it.  I get my water, retreat to the bedroom and stay back there for an hour!  VM finally comes in and I whisper my question, "What's he doing now?".  TJ is completely turned around and watching the video, YEAH!  I was so excited, I was making some headway and knew that this film would make an impact on TJ.
The movie ended and I was sure TJ would eat his spoonful of veggies and we would start to see some changes to his openness for eating more veggies.  I asked him what he thought of the movie and he said it was very interesting.  I let him know that after watching this movie, I understand if he didn't want to eat his meat however take a bit of the veggies and have some fruits and we'll call it a night.
BAM!  The knock on the back of my head came out of nowhere...I didn't expect the answer he would give me.  After watching the movie and two hours of torture on what my next step would be, what I envisioned the ending of it all was not to be so!  My son, stubborn and willful, looked at me and said, no.
I couldn't believe it, one little bite was all I was asking and after watching this movie, he still would not eat his veggies.  All my energy just flowed right out of my body and at that point I almost threw in the white towel.  But at this point, I was too angry to see any other way out, I stuck to my original guns and repeated what was started two hours ago..."You are not to get up from this table until you eat some dinner, even if you have to stay here all night!"  And with that I marched back into my bedroom.
VM of course disagreed with me but I was just tired.  I didn't know what else to do and didn't want to deal with it anymore.  If he ate, fine, if he didn't I was also fine with that.  Not VM, he went into the kitchen got TJ a carrot, celery and an apple w/PB.  TJ ate it all w/no complaints.
As much as I want to improve the eating habits of TJ, I will have to do it in baby steps and not be quite as aggressive.  As a mom, I just want what's best for my son and sometimes when it comes down to the battle of food...you may win some and you may lose some.
At this time, I ordered a book for TJ to read.  It's the kids version of An Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan.  Because he thought the movie was interesting, he was open to becoming more educated on food.  So maybe this is one I didn't lose?

That is a great story! Stubborn boy...takes after his grandma, though. Hopefully, things will improve. Maybe you should have him cook with you so he'll eat it. Good luck!
